Burkina Faso is known as the land of masks; majority of the people in the region use masks. Materials and techniques used to fashion masks are quite similar throughout.

Mostly masks are covered with complex compositions of rectangles, triangles, crescents and other geometric shapes, which are carved or pyroengraved, and then colored red, black and white using natural pigments.

One of the major tribe in Burkina Faso is the Bobo Tribe - they have hand-carved sheilds in totem style that are for agricultural ceremonies to promote healthy harvests.
