Product Description

This vintage Kota mask comes from the Bakota Tribe in Gabon and was used to communicate with the Ancestors. When the chief of the tribe passes away, part of the ritual is to decorate his body with brass, copper and other metals.  These pieces of metal often resembled a cobra head and would be used to decorate a wood figure.

Often the piece would have two faces, one on each side and represented to Ancestors on one figure.  The tribe and the new Chief would dance with the Kota Mask at ceremonies to communicate with the Ancestors.  This mask also serves as protection from evil.

Small cracks, discoloration, etc are a normal part of the ageing process and add to the character of each item.

Comes with a wall hanging fitting on the back.  These images are the examples of Kota; on ordering we will email an image of the Kota masks in stock.
