This is a beautiful example of a traditional male Songye Kifwebe Mask, made by the Songi Tribe of The Democratic Republic of Congo. 

There is a secret society of masked men within the Songi tribe called Bwadi bra Kifwebe.  These men are well known for their witchcraft or sorcery, this talent is inherited or learnt either by will or unconsciously.  The men of the society are responsible for maintaining balance within the tribe and conduct all rituals, initiations, circumcisions and funerals.  The Kifwebe masks come in various designs and symbolized the spirits of the dead, the underworld and the struggle between good and evil.

Small cracks, discoloration, etc are a normal part of the ageing process and add to the character of each item.
