Product Description

100% Handmade authentic Kuba Cloth, hailing from the banks of the mighty Congo River.

These striking cloths are woven from strands of raffia palm leaves which are dyed with natural plant, root and vegetable dyes.

It is long process to ready the leaves for weaving which can take weeks if the weather conditions are not in the weavers favour.  The Kuba cloth was traditionally used by the royal family of Congo for ceremonial costumes and decorating the home of the traditional leader.

Each cloth is hand woven so no two designs are the same, however the patterns are always very bold and fairly geometric.  The gorgeous earthy tones and colours of the cloth are inspired by the African landscape and the sunbaked earth.

The Kuba people share the work when it comes to producing the Kuba cloth.  In general the men are the ones who get the palm leaves ready and are the main weavers.  While the women are responsible for the creative designs, putting the pieces together and all finishing touches.

Slight imperfections are considered normal and designs will vary.
