This detailed statue comes from The Democratic Republic of Congo, Zaire. The Bacongo Tribe believed these to be powerful protection figures, and were used in a dancing ceremonies. They are strong believers that the spirit of the Ancestors live in these figures and would travel from its "base" and inflict misfortune or curse those who had bad intentions. These were often used to protect entire villages from evildoers and witches.
This particular item is from the early 20th century estimated to be somewhere between 60 to 80 years old.
Small cracks, discoloration, etc are a normal part of the ageing process and add to the character of each item.
