This statue is from the Mabilla Plateau in Cameroon . The Mabilla people only worship family ancestors, according to their beliefs the ancestors take ones soul away at your deathbed. These statues are believed to house the souls of the ancestors. The Mabilla people entrust their prosperity, safety and the whole tribes wealth to these statutes. Masks and statues are kept hidden from the woman and are guarded by the head of the family. These statues often have animal heads, in this case a crocodile, which represent strength and bravery.
This particular statue is 70 to 80 years old
